Dates - A good appetizer for breaking of fast
Saturday, 7 July 2012
Report from The STAR dated Saturday 30 September 2006 :-
DATES are synonymous with the Muslim
fasting month of Ramadan as they are believed to be good appetisers
during the breaking of fast.
Tradition also has it that Prophet Muhammad consumed the honey-sweet dried fruit whenever he broke fast.
At S.I.T Spices & Herbs Sdn Bhd in Jalan
Kampung Benggali, Butter-worth, customers are spoilt for choice as there
are about 40 types of the delectable date imported from Iran, Saudi
Arabia, Tunisia, Egypt and Pakistan.
Company owner and managing director Alla Bux Abdul
Latif, 50, said that although the dates are available in his shop all
year round, he has doubled his orders during the fasting month.
TASTY
AND AROMATIC: Alla Bux (right) showing customers Mohamad Shah Ibrahim
(left) and Ustaz Shamsul Bahrin Din the variety of dates he has in
stock.
Many customers usually go for the more tastier
and aromatic dates. The Ajwa dates, which I am selling for RM90 per kg,
is the most sought-after item.
Also known as kurma Nabi, these blackish-brown dates are small and round, just like prunes,he said.
The other popular ones, he said, were the Anbara, Mabroom, Safawi, Aswad, Khudari, Shalabi and Sugee.
He also said that the Iranian Marianis were longish and quite dry, while the Tunisian Safias came with their vines intact.
We also have two types of seedless dates from China as well as the moist rotab bam honey dates from Saudi Arabia, he said.
Alla Bux said he also sells about 300 types of
herbs and 30 types of spices and beans imported from India, Indonesia
and China.
Those involved in making traditional healthcare
products often come here to get raw herbs either on retail or wholesale
purchases.
I also import jaggery powder, aval, roasted gram dhall and pori
which are commonly used to prepare snacks during Deepavali as well as
herbal products and incense sticks used for prayers in Hindu temples,he said.
Among the herbs available at his shop are black cumin seed, ashwaganda, senna leaves, kadukai, kunyit kasturi, jerangau, galangal, ajwan seed, cabai tali, licorice roots and black aloe.
There are also many types of beans such as chickpeas, masoor dhall, mochai, malavi thoor dhall, urid gotha and split black beans.
Alla Bux said his father, Abdul Latif Sinni
Mohamed, started a small wholesale shop called Syarikat Ilahi Trading in
Penang Street in 1974. He later shifted the business to Market Street
in 1980.
I began helping my father after completing my SPM in 1974.
He made me a partner five years later before handing over the business to me in 1997.
Life was difficult back then. I used a bicycle, and later a tricycle to transport sacks of spices and dried chilli from the Sia Boey market to our shop.
I opened the retail and wholesale shop in
Butterworth during Ramadan last year to cater for my customers in
Seberang Prai, he said, adding that he hoped to open another shop in
Kuala Lumpur.
